What Makes Focus First Different

Students are taught on guided routes that progress from beginner to experienced levels.
Parallel parking is included, even though many students have never practiced it.
Students gain experience on interstates and back roads that parents may avoid.
Instruction is adapted to each student’s current ability to ensure steady progress.

How Behind The Wheel Works
The program runs for 7 days total.
Each session includes:
- 50 minutes of driving.
- 50 minutes of observing another driver.
Students learn by both driving and observing realtime instruction.
Lessons cover driving from parking lots, through city roads, and onto the interstate.
The program follows three core steps:
- Gather and verify all required paperwork, including permit copy, student information packet, Drivers Education Certificate (DEC-1), and confirmation of the 90-minute Partners for Safe Teen Driver Meeting.
- Guide students through progressively challenging routes and driving scenarios.
- Administer the road test on the final day of the program.
Lessons do not need to be scheduled on consecutive days. If a student needs additional time, lessons can be spaced out to allow further practice between sessions.

The cost is $375.
Does Virginia require students to take Behind the Wheel?
Students under 18 must complete Behind the Wheel to earn their license. Students 18 and older who have held a permit for 60 days may take the DMV road test, but they may still choose to complete Behind the Wheel.
If I complete Behind the Wheel with Focus First Driving School, who issues my license?
Focus First Driving School issues the license once all requirements are met and the program is passed.
If I pass Behind the Wheel before my 9 months with a permit is complete, can I drive early?
No. Students must still wait until the 9 month permit period is complete. The license is issued but does not go into effect until that time.
