Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be to get a permit?

Students need to be 15 and 6 months of age in order to go to the DMV to take their permit test

Is behind the wheel necessary for my child to get their license?

Yes, if the student is under the age of 18, Virginia laws require students to take and pass a behind the wheel program. If the student is 18 or older, they may still take behind the wheel or they have the option of road testing at the DMV. It is recommended that students that do not have over 45 hours of practice, to take behind the wheel.

What happens if my student fails the permit test three times?

If a student fails the permit test three times, they are required to take an 8 hour driver manual/re-examintion course in order to be eligible to take the permit test a 4th time.

How many hours does my child need in order to obtain their license?
Virginia requires 45 hours of driving experience, with 15 of those hours being at night. It would also be beneficial for students to get 15 hours during adverse weather conditions.
What happens if my students fails the road test
If a student fails their road test, we ask that they continue to drive until they have reached their 45 hours, then road test again at that time.
How can I help my child become a safe and confident driver?
Practice! Make sure to start your child in a safe environment like an empty parking lot to master driving techniques. Then build their confidence by driving in neighborhoods, then onto main roads and eventually onto the highway/back roads.
When is the earliest my child can obtain their license?
The earliest a student can get their license is 16 and 3 months of age. Once a student gets their permit, they must hold their permit for 9 months. During that 9 months, the student must complete drivers education, attend a 90 minute Partners for Safe Teen Driving Meeting and complete a behind the wheel program. If all of those tasks are completed, they will be able to get their license.
Does my child still need to go to court or the DMV to get their license once the 9 months is up?

It depends on your location. Students that live in Prince William or Spotsylvania County, you will receive a letter from the courts for a ceremonial date to get the license. If you live in Stafford County, the DMV will send the license directly to your home address.
